About Mary Jane
Mary Jane has spent her life surrounded by music, joining her first choir at the age of three. Early piano studies culminated in conservatory training on that instrument as well as the organ. Along the way, there was time for the flute, recorders of all sizes, and the guitar. Mary Jane has sung, taught lessons and played, directed an assortment of choirs and chamber choruses over her 25 year career – and loved every minute of it!
While the harp came later, it was love at first sight. Her studies with Megha Morganfield and Victoria Schultz combined technique with the freedom to explore music from Bach to Gershwin and Andrew Lloyd Webber because Mary Jane loves just about every kind of music there is. She has brought her music to weddings, receptions, dinners and business events with the professionalism that lets her clients relax and focus on the guests.
The Lever Harp
Mary Jane Ballou performs on a five-octave lever
or celtic-style harp.
Also known as the troubadour or folk harp, this
harp is the modern descendant of the harps of Ireland
and Scotland. The contemporary lever harp
uses small levers to raise the pitch of individual
strings by a half step. And all types of music
from traditional to jazz are now performed on this
instrument which is lighter and more portable than
the orchestral harp.
With the light amplification Mary Jane can provide, her music can be tailored to fit the needs of your room and event, while still giving a wonderful sense of warmth and intimacy.
As a radio personality, Mary Jane can be heard on
WFCF 88.5 FM St. Augustine where she produces and
hosts a weekly, two-hour radio show each Friday featuring
the less-travelled paths of classical music.
